The district has butted heads with neighbors over plans for Manitou Community Center, Franklin Park and Kandle Park. What more, if anything, should the district do to improve relationships with neighborhoods and include them in their plans?
"Butted Heads" is not the correct term. We have had discussions regarding the Manitou Center, and the parties involved came to a very satisfactory arrangement. The old center is being used and we will be building a new center soon. The issue regarding Franklin and Kandle Parks is one of placing a community pool. Again, not "Butting Heads" but open public discussion. This is how to improve relationship, with open dialogue.
What's your vision for Point Defiance Park as the district prepares to consider a master plan for the beloved property?
My vision is not too much different than what we have now. I see improved waterfront and water activities, enhanced trail system, forest education and learning opportunities. We will take public comment and make some changes. We will continue to be good stewards of the environment, continue to improve the park for the enjoyment of this generation and future generations to come.
What are two other issues facing the district, and what would you do about them?
1. Finding a revenue stream without adding taxes. I have formed a Revenue Task Force, compiled of 15 business community leaders, to help define new revenue resources outside of the traditional governmental revenue box. 2. Protecting the assets of the Park District. By implementing the capital improvements that the citizens voted for, we are protecting the buildings and park grounds for future generations. By not selling park property, we are protecting the lands and the environment.
Personal Statement
As we look to the future, we must work together to enhance the park system in order to have the best parks, recreation programs and zoos for future generations to enjoy. It is a matter of a quality of life that we as citizens of Tacoma are entitled to. I am dedicated, responsive and hard working. I believe I have represented the public on the Metro Parks Board very well.
