Edgewood council position 6« Go back
Dave Olson
Residence: Edgewood
Contact: 253-219-8443
E-mail: davideolson@comcast.net
Occupation: Sales Rep

Experience: With four daughters in the Puyallup School District, I have been a parent volunteer through the years. This past year, I've become involved with the Daffodil Festival. I've been a member of Kiwanis since 2005.

Education: Bachelor of Arts degree, Business Administration, Washington State University, 1985.

What do you see as the three top issues facing Edgewood?
In Edgewood we have limited revenues, too large of a staff for the current level of activity in the city, and a split opinion as to the desired level of service in Police protection. The first two are typical issues facing any city, or business. We will resolve them with decisions we 'need' to make. The third issue, Police protection, is more of a question the community can tell us what they 'want'.

What measures would you support to keep your city living within its means?
I support trimming our staff to a more appropriate level. As the city grew, so did the staff. But understandably, we've been affected by the economy, and things are "a little slow around the office". That means layoffs, no different than almost every other city or business out there. I also support measures to fend more for ourselves as a city and decreasing our dependence on state shared revenues by bolstering our tax base.

Why are you the best candidate for this office?
With apologies to the great Yogi Berra, if Edgewood wants to stay the same, we're going to need to make some changes. I was elected four years ago to enact those changes that citizens desperately wanted. Now, in these difficult economic times, I'm still an optimistic believer, and I still not giving up on my belief that the citizens of Edgewood know what's best for our city's future, and will continue to listen to them.

Personal Statement:
We have a two-term limit here in Edgewood. I think that's perfect. My first term was a great introduction into the political world and I feel I made some nice contributions to the council. If I'm fortunate enough to be re-elected, my added experience will help contribute even more to the positive momentum we have going. Then, I will gladly walk from my city council experience and support the new leadership coming in behind me.

What do you see as the three top issues facing Edgewood?
Budget. Paying for current services. Completing the Sewer Line on Meridian.

What measures would you support to keep your city living within its means?
I would consider changing the cost of permits and other services. Check to see if there is another way to provide public safety without cutting police services. Look at furlough days for employees. Rent city hall space to organizations for meetings or a local business. Sell unused city property.

Why are you the best candidate for this office?
I have the experience and the depth of knowledge for the City of Edgewood. Having lived here since 1949 I have the unique perspective of Edgewood's history. My ability to have the time to read the material needed to make the decisions and go to meetings that give additional information for our issues. I have relationships with Senator's and Legislators that can help with legislation that would benefit Edgewood citizens.

Personal Statement:
I am dedicated to improving our community by creating an environment of hope and unity. I promise to work tirelessly to improve conditions in our community and affect positive change that will benefit all of the community residents. Working with my constituents and members of the city council, I will advocate for sound government principles through streamlined government policies that are more productive and cost efficient.
