Describe how you see the role of the Civil Service board.
I see the Civil Service board as part of the checks and balances for the city and its employees. The policies, contracts, agreements and laws all have their part in employment and conduct. The board was originally created as a tool to keep management in check and eliminate the appearance of narcissism and corruption in employment and hiring practices within the city.
How would you strike the proper balance between the interests of the city and taxpayers and the rights of city employees?
When looking at the issues being brought before the board we have to look at the facts and data around the issue, the intent of the policies and agreements in question, and the conduct of those involved, as appropriate. The decisions and rulings need to be as objective and consistent as possible. The idea is to not have an air of subjectivity or unfairness.
What qualifies you to sit on the board?
My over 10 years of private sector management experience and my 8 years of association leadership and bargaining experience. And I have lived in Tacoma all of my life.

Describe how you see the role of the Civil Service board.
The primary role of the Civil Service Board is to foster a transparent and fair forum for classified employees to voice their complaints and/or file appeals.
Secondly, the Civil Service Board assists City staff with locating local sources of highly qualified employees.
How would you strike the proper balance between the interests of the city and taxpayers and the rights of city employees?
A Civil Service Board member has to remain neutral especially when conducting an appeals hearing. This ensures all the facts are given their due weight and consideration.
Unrepresented parties are provided with information regarding the appeal hearing or complaint process.
Sufficient time is given to hear all aspects of the issue. Some matters may require a second or third session.
What qualifies you to sit on the board?
My professional experience includes work in both exempt and non-exempt positions within public agencies.
Skills and understanding gained from these roles enhances my appreciation of the issues brought before the Civil Service Board.
As a risk management consultant I understand the legal and insurance issues which often occur within personnel matters.
Personal Statement:
I am looking forward to continue serving the City of Tacoma to ensure it provides efficient services, holds employees and managers accountable, and draws on world class talent to support an outstanding and diverse workforce.
