What do you see as the three top issues facing the district?
State Funding levels: Bethel has a difficult time passing levies and bonds, property owners expect us to be concerned about property taxes. Student performance: Each child has different talents and a high score on a test will not determine success, nor does it determine whether the teacher is effective or worthy of better wages. World Class education: Our kids must have the opportunity to get a world class education and preparation for their future success.

What measures would you support to keep the district living within its means?
Setting standards: Building to quality standards the first time around, building smarter and greener are excellent goals. Green Transportation: Bethel should continue down the environmental path by purchasing district vehicles that adhere to higher gas mileage standards and or take alternative fuels. The large district puts many miles on vehicles, there's room to save. Textbook alternatives: Bethel has suffered textbook shortages, leading to lower expectations in classrooms. We should explore the emerging electronic media.

What more should the district do to improve student achievement?
Don't dumb anything down. Make the students reach higher. They'll gripe now, but come back with appreciation later. We also must remember to inspire confidence in children for them to aspire to their full potential.

Personal Statement:
With 42 years in the district, a math and science background, experience in teaching college level courses, a world-wide perspective from my private sector employment experience, and more community service than most would believe, I want to have the chance to encourage kids, parents and taxpayers from Bethel that we are in the game and we just as capable of success as anyone. Believe in Bethel; we can deliver.
