Boycott Billboard Blight

The View Over Tacoma

A man after my own heart! Dean Wilson’s letter-to-the-editor in today’s TNT is exciting. Wilson suggests starting a grassroots movement to boycott businesses that advertize on the Clear Channel’s giant eyesores. Sign me up, Dean. Wilson suggests not just refusing to buy goods and services from these businesses, but to let them know your intention.

So what do you say? Make a commitment today to not give businesses that contribute to the visual blight on Tacoma one more nickel, then call or email them telling them so. Clear Channel is not interested in Tacoma’s skyline, only their bottom line so let’s hurt them where it counts.

I suppose I just don't get it. he city has decided that a form of business that they allowed, that essentially harms no one, is no longer legal and that business, at their own expense, must tear it down. Never mind that that busines often did public service work. Never mind that some of those same people who are demanding the removal of the business used that business to get themselves elected, that business is some big boogyman that now must be removed.

Nevermind that that same city used those same billboards for years to either inform the public or sell a service the city provides.

There are thousands of ugly, blighted, properties in this city that the city ignores - and we ignore - but because the billboards do their job and we see them, we want them taken away.

I'm no big fan of the billboards. They are sometimes a bit too numerous and their size needs to be regulated, but to say that they all must go seems a bit unfair to a company doing a legal business that the city allowed for decades.

And as for the the advertisers, I assume you are going to call Click, Tacoma Power, The anti-smoking people, most local and state politicians, The state government, Some of the anti-hunger organizations, churches and other various charities and causes and let them know they won't be getting your support as well. All are ads I've seen in the past few months.

wWhat will be the next business that the city decides to run out of town?

Bill Boards and Clear Channel have been kicked out of San Paulo, Brazil. How does Ontario handle the billboard issue?

There seems to b e a few around town here in Belleville. Frankly, until now, I hadn't paid much attention. Much worse to me is the sign forest on North Front street here in Belleville where my hotel is located. I'm staying at a Holiday Inn Express and I litereally cannot see the sign until I'm up on it and it is not a small sign.

I feel that in this age of technology and mass communications we are visually assualted on all fronts by those who would seperate us from our money.

As soon as someone tells me how to include photos, I'll upload a couple.
